Sandro Botticelli's Famous Pieces of Art
Return of Judith to Bethulia
This painting shows Judith, a Jewish woman who was completely devoted to god. Bethulia, an Israelite town, was threatened by the King Nebuchadnezzar’s Assyrian army under the command of Holofernes. Judith was a widow, who was both pretty and honorable. She decided she was going to be the savior of her city, and took it upon herself to make a plan.
Fortitude
Botticelli’s painting contained refined detail and color, as you can see. He made 7 paintings, each including virtues, or moral excellences, and three Christian values; Faith, Hope and Charity, and four worldly values; Temperance, Prudence, Fortitude and Justice. These Virtues were to remind the court of good, fair and moral judgment. Botticelli was commissioned to do Fortitude that represents the qualities strength, resilience and courage. This was Botticelli’s first opportunity to show his work to the people. These paintings launched his career.
